Why Healthcare?

In the northern communities, the absence of nearby medical clinics leaves residents without essential healthcare access, exacerbating healthcare disparities.

kuboko Clinic Project

Kuboko is a community in Bawku West in the Upper East Region of Northern Ghana. The community is made up of predominantly women and children. It is approximately 42 km away from Upper East’s capital, Bolgatanga. The people in this community are low-income farmers. Pefhed set out to build a clinic for the community from the ground up.  Before this project, the people had to walk 42 km to Bolgatanga to access healthcare.

Impact of the kuboko Clinic

The Clinic in Kuboko is positively transforming the lives of countless individuals. Through improved access to healthcare services, the clinic has effectively reduced mortality rates, enhanced maternal and child health, and uplifted the general well-being of the community. Pefhed’s commitment to providing sustainable healthcare solutions serves as an inspiring example of the profound impact that organizations and individuals can have when they prioritize the welfare of underserved communities.

Health Insurance Project

In Bawku West, an impoverished community of small-scale farmers in Ghana, the government’s affordable health insurance scheme remains inaccessible to many due to financial constraints. Priced at a reasonable rate of 30 Ghana cedis (~3 USD) annually, the insurance coverage is out of reach for these vulnerable communities. As a result, individuals cannot afford check-ups or seek medical care when they are unwell. This lack of access hinders preventive care, early detection of illnesses, and timely interventions.

Over 2000 Insured

Pefhed’s successful initiative to provide insurance coverage for 2,000 individuals has brought significant benefits to the community. Insured individuals now have access to essential healthcare services, including check-ups, preventive care, and prompt medical treatment when needed. This has resulted in improved health outcomes, reduced medical expenses, and enhanced overall well-being for the insured population.

However, there is a pressing need to expand insurance coverage to reach more individuals in the community.

Neonatal Care Project

The lack of neonatal care facilities and equipment in the local region forces mothers with premature babies to travel long distances to the capital city of Bolgatanga to provide necessary care and nutrition. This situation poses health risks, financial burdens, and emotional distress. Immediate intervention is required to address this pressing issue and ensure the well-being and survival of premature infants while alleviating the hardships faced by their mothers.

Donation of an Incubator

Through a district grant, the Rotary Club made a valuable contribution by donating an incubator to the Zebilla District Hospital in collaboration with Pefhed. This donation has provided essential benefits to the hospital and the community, offering a controlled environment for premature infants and improving their chances of survival. However, to meet the increasing demand, additional incubators are needed. Expanding access to this life-saving equipment, made possible through the Rotary Club’s support and district grant, will enable more mothers and babies to receive adequate neonatal care locally, reducing the need for long and difficult journeys to access such facilities elsewhere.
