Our Story
PeFHED; Founded to address the inequalities and unmet needs of the communities we come from in northern Ghana
Welcome to The Peoples Foundation!
In November 2015, a transformative call from the Mandela Rhodes Foundation ignited a journey that has profoundly impacted my life and opened doors to unparalleled opportunities. I had been awarded the Mandela Rhodes Scholarship tenable at the University of Johannesburg. Upon returning to Ghana that December, I was fueled by the vision and inspiration from the MRF and its founder, Nelson Mandela, to give back to my community much as they had announced a significant investment in my education and professional development. This was the moment I conceived the Peoples Foundation for Health and Education Development (PeFHED). Before I returned to South Africa in January 2016, PeFHED was a registered non-profit. I financed its initial activities from my scholarship stipend, which exceeded my basic needs.
Drawing from my own childhood experiences and my work within Ghana’s health system, I recognized the vital link between education and health. Education empowers individuals to lead healthier lives, while good health enhances productivity, supports families, and extends lifespans. Guided by this understanding, our foundation was established with a commitment to advancing both health and education.
We began our mission with health education for young people, focusing on sexual health, the importance of vaccinations, and providing essential educational resources to talented yet underprivileged children.
Our efforts have always been fueled by the belief that even modest resources can spark significant change. One of our landmark achievements has been the completion of the Kuboko Clinic. Through strategic partnerships with Rotary Clubs and individual Rotarian philanthropists in the United States, we brought round-the-clock healthcare access to the people of Kuboko. This clinic has become a cornerstone of health in the community, offering vital services and vaccines previously inaccessible.
In addition, we have provided over 400 dual-desks to more than 15 public schools in the Bawku West District and established the largest public library by book volume in the Upper East Region, boasting over 24,000 books. These contributions have transformed educational experiences and opportunities for countless students. Our impact extends to improving school environments. We have provided dignified furniture for adolescent girls, ensuring they can continue their education comfortably. Additionally, over 70 kindergarten children now learn in a dedicated 2-unit pavilion, moving from makeshift classrooms under trees to a proper learning space. As I reflect on our journey, I am filled with pride and gratitude. We have implemented over $300,000 worth of projects since our inception, making a tangible difference in countless lives and communities.
Looking ahead, our focus remains steadfast on basic education, literacy, and global health, with special attention to mental health, neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), maternal and child health, and health research. We are actively seeking partnerships and collaborations to propel our mission forward. With 95% of all donations directly supporting project implementation, every contribution has a profound impact. I invite you to join us in our mission. Your support can help us continue to advance education and healthcare in northern Ghana. Donate today to support our mission.
